Peter Michael winner of Haining Festival Marathon & World Mens 5000 meters road relay Gold, along with sister Samantha & Nicole Begg will compete in N.Z. Champs & the “Tour of Timaru”
While most of the rest of the World takes a spell, XTECH International stars Nicole Begg & Peter Michael will be busy back home in N.Z.
New Zealand is in the middle of of there racing season, Next the N.Z. road racing champs on the tricky Mt. Wellington Go Cart track Auckland 1st to 3rd January 2011, then the indoor 100 meter track the 4th to 8th January.
Then 18th to 23rd January in Timaru New Zealand the once famous ” Tour of Timaru “: will be revived for the second year in Succession, Former top shelf World stars John Fry England 1977 & Bobby Kaiser USA 1985 have featured as past winners, with other well known Internationals Curt Labeda USA & Mick McGeough England, plus in the early days used to draw about 30 Australian competitors a year used to attend, with Ron Woods, Tim Smyth & Craig Moore some of the early pioneers, while Australians Darryl Neucombe 1981, Mark Whitby 1982, & Tony Keefe, the basking Jedbutt took out the Tour in 1984 & 1990.
Multiple winners were Roger Hawkins Christchurch 1986,1987 & 1989. Wayne Millar Timaru 1978 & 1979. Shane Clarke Christchurch 1991 & 1994 with Donald McVeigh Auckland 1992 & Johnny Dyatt Cathew New Plymouth 1993 winning the tour.
The first ever winner was yours truely Timaru Hometown skater Bill Begg in 1976 & the latest winner in a revived Tour after a 15 year break was Nicole Begg, who was comming 2nd overall when World Champion Peter Michael, damaged his ankle in a beach accident midway through the event & Nicole went on to take out the event, in probably the first time women raced in the mens A grade. This year Nicole Along with Peter Michael will compete, plus other XTECH N.Z. Skaters Wayne Begg & Samantha Michael, also likely participants.
A unique event has a steeplechase race. The local Timaru club members offer billitted accomodation, to visiting overseas & inter Island skaters, to keep costs down, with both Prizes in Cash & Kind.
There will be an International ISA Coaching course held in Timaru, as added interest for overseas visitors.
Another attraction will be the N.Z. Marathon Championships held at Levels car race way, on the 23rd January, as the last stage event, of the Tour it Could also double up as an AIC / WIC satellite marathon event.
The Marathon will be held on the Sunday the 23rd January at 5pm, following the big Levels National series car racing meet.
