N.Z. Champs new XTECH Hero’s

Well the long Drawn out N.Z. Championships are over for another year, with the promise that the 2011 champs will be cut down by two days. The speed skaters alliance with a combined champs with Artistic is wearing thin & 8 days is far to long & to costly, 6 days is the maximum time that most of the speed fraternity, are prepared to accept.

Nicole Begg X-TECH although ill during the championships, completed all the road races to win the 4 ladies & 2 open titles from the 200 T/T through to 20,000 & the 3 ladies & 2 open track races, to take her tally to around 220 N.Z. senior titles & an unbeaten streak in Individual N.Z. senior titles for several years. She also was a member of the winning ladies relay team, but a big performance in the ladies 1,200 pairs relay, saw her have to settle for her first Silver medal at a N.Z. champs for several years.

Peter Michael X-TECH International was the top man on the road & Antony Nalder X-TECH WHEELZ N.Z. the top on the track & top overall man.

X-TECH WHEELZ N.Z. Junior member Emily van der Heyden was the outstanding Junior girl on the road, with 2 gold & 2 Silver, also one of the Ladies Relay winning road team with Marie-Christen Kuepper & her Mentor Nicole Begg. Emily was the 3rd fastest N.Z. Lady on the road for the 200 T/T in 21.235, only just behind Intermediate Champ & 3 times World Junior representative Renee Nyman 21.169, the rapid rise of Emily to the top ranks of N.Z. speed skating has caught many by suprise.

Emily van der Heyden the 14 year old South Canterbury club member from the little town of Waimate, winner of the 200 T/T from Timaru Team mate Dahna Penty & Haley Ching.

The Begg family are determined to help develope N.Z. ladies to a higher level, as in her 9 appearances at World champs Nicole Begg has never had a team mate capable of working with her & helping her at Worlds. Samantha Michael younger sister of World Champion Peter Michael, will shift to Timaru to stay with Nicole & be coached by the Begg family, in an effort to improve her International standing.
