Great news today for the Timaru based South Canterbury Roller Skating Club ( The region surrounding Timaru city ) with country towns of Temuka, pleasant Point, Geraldine, Waimate, Tekapo, Twizel, Mount Cook & Albury the main Towns.
The Southern Trust have advised of a $50,000 contribution to the venture, which will be the only 200 meter track up to International specifications in the Oceania region.
There is a strong Possibility that the 2015 World championships could come to Timaru New Zealand, as it will have been two decades since Oceania has had World championships.
1980 Masterton New Zealand, World track & road Championships, 1986 Adelaide Australia World Road skating Championships, 1989 Hastings New Zealand World Bank track championships. 1995 Perth Australia World Bank Track & Road World titles. So a trip Down under is well overdue.
With work due to start possibly as early as March, the 2012 International “TOUR OF TIMARU” is likely to be held on the new 200 meter track, with the Tour Scheduled to take place from the 8th to 13th January 2012.
