Timaru speedskater Nicole Begg grabbed second consecutive second place in the World Inline Cup to lead the championships by 30 points.
The consistent Begg was in a breakaway group of four in the marathon but was pipped to the line by Columbian Cecilia Baena in Rennes, France.
That was enough for Begg to lead the title race for the first time in her career.
She has competed on the circuit since 2004 and finished second overall in 2006 and 2008.
The World Inline Cup title is the only one missing from the 23-year-old trophy cabinet and she will compete in the third round in Korea next week.
Samantha Michael, who trained with Begg in Timaru before heading to Europe, finished ninth.
