Timaru Club N.Z. Pleasing Developement progress

Personally I am very pleased & proud of the progress of our Timaru based Cadet team, with both the skaters & their parents.

With first time up & uniforms & having to stay in Camp, it is a very expensive exercise, so thanks to the parents for supporting all their Children chosen for the Oceania team, all the young skaters in our club chosen, now have the chance to fulfill their first stepping stone dream & proudly wear the silver fern. So congratulations to the families Juniors & senior Le Roy, McDonald, Smith, Autridge Patrick, Frame, O’Connor, Oldfield, Lowen & McCormack. and good to see Boudine Brown & Renee Hewitt who missed this year, but sure to make the team next year, out there working on there Technical form.
We set out a tougher training schedule & all the cadets have responded, putting in the time & effort needed & all are possible individual medal contenders.
So its a big effort from all, the coaches, the club Officials & parents & I am sure like myself, they are all very proud of you all.
We are almost there & right into the main peaking Cycle training now, so do not go out doing more tough stung, as at this stage more is not better and as you start to do less & become energetic, do not find other avenues to waste it on, you will need that for Oceania champs.
With 6 of the 10 girls & 4 of the 5 Boys in the Oceania team, this will set a good foundation for the future, with 3 of the other girls close by in the South Island & the other boy also.
After years of traveling to the North Island, its a sad day when only 1 of the 15 Cadets in the N.Z. team is based in the North Island.
So lets see who really want to taste success, as we enter the final phase of training for Oceania’s

Michael Wins in Colombia & N.Z. Champs

Hi Big win for Peter Michael in Colombia at the weekend winning the track elimination. While world Teamate Scott Arlidge was giving the rest of the N.Z. men a skating lession winning the 1,000, 10,000 Points Elimination & 15,000 Elimination at the N.Z. champs. With the top International N.Z. men competing at the national championships becomming a rareity, it was good to see Scott present & showing some real speed skating.

In the absence of Peters Sister Samantha & Nicole Begg Stephanie Challis was the outstanding senior ladies competitor, she won all but the senior 300 T/T which went to Renee Nyman, but Jessica Van Bentum, Emily van der Heyden & Indonesian Sheilla Dewi Intermediate all went faster, plus the Juniors Judah Kelley & Dahna Penty.
The 5 Indonesian skaters on ISA skating Scholarships had a victory in the ladies relay with Devina Pramudita, Adinia Rizkayanti & Sheilla Dewi beating the Wanganui & South Canterbury teams, Pramadita was 2nd in both the senior ladies 500 & 1,000 meters, while Dewi was 3rd in the 300 T/T, 500 & 1,000 behind the two top Intermedeiates Emily van der Heyden & Jessicca van Bentum.
Nikko Amrullah was 3rd in the Intermediate mens Time Trial, then put in an impressive performance in the open mens 15,000 Elimination finishing 5th, after elimination world skaters Kierryn Hughes & Mark MacDonald, when going into the final bend, he looked like the one to be eliminated. Aldy Rahardja raced well, but was short on speed & will be working on this while in N.Z.

On the small slow track Ollie Jones got a new 1,000 meter record when Indonesian Nikko Amrullah took off like a Rocket & Jones had to go hard after him to reel him in & it took the sting out of Sprinter Josh Whyte & the tough Jones took the Title, the youngster also made many attacks on Scott Arlidge in the opens & will never be left asking the Question.

Timaru based South Canterbury club Primary Ella Benson the only skater to take out a Time trial record at the national road champs, on a slow course. was looking for another record, after missing both the 300 T/T & 1,000 records by small margins she was back in Business taking 3.27 off the old 2008 record.
Olyvia Mayhew Hutt Valley finally got rid of an old Juvinile girls record, that somehow had survived since 1987 Quad days.

Antony Nalder took out the mens 300 T/T & 500 races & threw a pass in the last corner on Scott Arlidge in the 15,000 Elimination, but Arlige dropped back past out of the turn, but a good effort from the sprinter, who is fronting up allround, after winning the marathon National title the week before.

Brilliant SBS Timaru floor 300T/T records fall

Brilliant Foor at SBS center.

The newly laid floor at the SBS center has produced spectacular results, the open mens N.Z. 100 meter track record was destroyed by almost 1 second, along with 5 other grade 300 Time Trial records. Not only are the speed skaters impressed with the record breaking floor, but the Artistic Figure skaters & dance skaters, were also impressed, N.Z. Federation of Roller Sports Executive Officer Roger Boulcott himself a top master competitor for many years, described it as one of the best for Artistic skating. With the World Artistic championships in Auckland later in the year, the Artistic are hoping for a Similar Floor.

5 times World Sprint champion Kalon Dobbin had his 2006 N.Z. record of 28.378 sec smashed as Antony Nalder Upper Hutt scorched the track in a spectacular display to win in 27.394
slicing (0.984 sec ) off the old record, after having to beat a time of 28.374 his teamate Dale Christofferson had set earlier in the event. Kierryn Hughes was 3rd in 28.486.

To prove records are made to be brocken Kapiti Intermediate grade skater Josh Whyte set a new time of 28.22 to obliterate the previous record of 29.632 held by current World champion Peter Michael, this had also been beaten by an earlier skater Ollie Jones 29.024 earlier in the event.

With the World Class 200 meter bank track newly built, plus an Indoor track that has visitors excited, Timaru is fast developing as a very desirable skating destination for Championship events, all thats needed is a good 400 to 600 meter road circuit, which will be required prior to the proposed 2015 or 2016 World championships in Timaru.

From a South Canterbury Perspective, not as much success in the 100 meter track Time trial events appart from Samantha Michael who won the senior ladies in 31.780, this Did not challenge Nicole Begg’s time of 30.349, a despondent Nicole relegated to Coaching & not able to compete due to mystery health problem, was annoyed at not having the opportunity to slip under 30 sec. Stephanie Challis Upper Hutt & Tegan Roffe Manawatu were 2nd & 3rd.

The Juvinile Girls Title Holder & recordholder Olyvia Mayhew Upper hutt set a new record in 34.819 with local Leah McDonald 2nd & Mikayla Biggs Auckland 3rd.

Intermediate Ladies saw Waimate skater Emily van der Heyden 32.845 pipped by Manawatu skater Daina Gibbs 32.814, with Wanganui skater Jessica van Bentum 3rd in 33.067.

Junior Girls had a suprise winner in Judah Kelly in a time of 33.133 a new record from teamate Rebecca Smith Wanganui in 33.281, with Dahna Penty 3rd in 34.155.

Junior Boys Guy McDonald missed a medal but the Aucland short track Ice trio of Zachary Biggs, Jason Clague & Alex Lewis cleaned up 1,2 & 3, Matthew Biggs the father of Zachary said it was great that such a floor was found for the Indoor speed, with the grip the short track ice skaters relished the conditions, he could not understand why more short track ice skaters did not attempt the indoor, another former Roller & Ice skater Brett McCormack won the Masters 300 T/T in a record time of 31.693 taking out Gary Clark’s old time of 32.297, the evergreen Krystine Davies Clark’s Partner took 2nd place.

Matthew Grigg Christchuch 34.241 beat Jan Kuepper 34.638 & Nick Frame 35.317 to win the Juvinile Boys, while in the Primary Girls Ella Benson 27.057 lost her first race, when Serenity Griffith Manawatu 26.561 won, with a good effort from Roshean O’Connor for her first medal.

Long distance track races continue tonight, with 1,500 & relay events on Saturday.
